Study 4

Investigating the experience and impact of moral distress and ethical climates on distress-suicidality in the nursing workforce, using mixed methods.

Context:

Moral distress has been extensively researched among nursing populations in North America, with scholars consistently reporting associations between moral distress, burnout, nurse turnover and intention to leave their profession. Despite these negative repercussions, there has been limited research conducted in the UK, meaning our understanding of moral distress and its relationship with psychological and emotional distress (including suicidality) and ethical climate remains limited.

Aims:

This study aims to clarify and characterise the causes of moral distress and psychological distress, and the relationship to ethical climate and suicidality.

Participants:

We will be seeking women nurses from ethnically and socially diverse populations in the UK to participate in this study.

This study commences in March 2026 and we will be recruiting participants in Spring 2026.

Methods:

We will be undertaking surveys and narrative interviews conducted sequentially, underpinned by feminist methodologies.
