Study 4

Exploring women nurses’ experiences of stress, distress and suicidality from a feminist organisational trauma perspective.

Context:

The reasons for the heightened rate of suicide among women nurses are under-explored and under-theorised, with most suicidology research adopting an individual pathologising approach to explaining suicidality. This study will generate novel qualitative evidence about nurses’ experiences of stress, distress and suicidality, grounded in the everyday practices and ‘work’ (both informal and formal) that nurses carry out.

Aims:

The study aims to explore nurses’ experiences of stress, distress and suicidality from a feminist organisational trauma perspective.

Methods:

There are two elements to this study. We will be undertaking online in-depth interviews, supplemented by diary accounts (diaries can take the form of short written accounts, voice notes or photos).

In parallel, we will be holding two online focus groups, where photos will aid the discussion.

Participants:

For the diary + interview element of the study, we will be recruiting women nurses who are registered to practice in the UK and we welcome nurses from from all specialisms and with experience from newly qualified practitioners onwards.

For the photovoice workshops, we will be recruiting nurses with 25+ years post-qualification experience.
