Study 3

Understanding the experiences and contexts of internationally qualified and ethnically diverse nurses, using narrative storytelling methods

Context:

In addition to common stressors and burnout experienced by nurses, nurses from the global majority tend to have extra pressures associated with being on the margins of society including racism, discrimination, lack of equality of opportunity, poor career progression and divergent cultural expectations.

Aims:

To explore complex issues that may affect international nurses’ work and social lives that may be contributing to distress.

Participants:

The experiences of internationally qualified nurses are currently unaccounted for in current research and policy. We will aim to recruit participants with a diverse range of voices and experiences.

We will be recruiting participants from Spring 2026.

Methods:

We will employ storytelling methods to capture contexts contributing to distress and suicidality within these communities. Storytelling enables individuals and communities to share knowledge and experiences and taking part is felt to be cathartic and empowering. We will be working with professional story-tellers from the global majority, JC Niala and Mara Menzies.
